One Mans Musings

Its 3 a.m. and let's check in with the first time mother.
Waking with a start in pitch black dark and crawling out from under the covers.
Her new baby is crying and she truly loves her, she wouldn't want any other,
But, at this moment, she's really not sure if she wants to have another.

We're pulling for you, all of you, sweet moms of newborns.
Come on, give us a smile, please don't look so forlorn.
Your babies are beautiful, perfect angels, I don't see any horns.
Oh look, the sun is up! Put on coffee, it's early morn.

Remember when everyone told you, "Relax, it's going to be fine?"
Did you forget they also said, "You'll be exhausted
ALL.
THE.
TIME?
Amid never ending changing of diapers, wiping drool and scrubbing of grime.
It seems long ago, but it wasn't, when you were relaxing with a glass of wine.

Now though, here in the dark, it occurs to you, "Where is my mate?"
I think he's still in bed. I bet he'll sleep 'til 8.
Maybe I should have thought twice, before going on that first date.
No, he's a good man, I just wish he didn't sleep so late.

But you can't believe how much you have changed, your love just grows and grows.
You can't take your eyes off your tiny new person, you're amazed by every finger and toe.
You try to explain it to other people, but it's frustrating that nobody knows,
The depth of the feelings you're having these days, but you're beautiful and trust me, it shows.

And if you may sometimes doubt yourself, I promise you're doing great.
No one could do this better than you, you really are first rate.
You're a fantastic mother, this was no mistake.
They were right, it will work out fine. You'll see, just you wait.

I expect you already know this inside and indeed are rightfully proud,
Of the job you're doing and you may deservedly take a bow.
You can't see them, but all around you is a cheering crowd.
You'd be able to hear them if that precious baby wasn't crying so loud.
